“You re planning on adding some subwoofers to your vehicle. You know that you want want to important style design. So you ve measured out your trunk or your rear. Or your under seat area.
Now. Let s say as an example you found that you have a space that is 14 inches. Tall by 32 inches. Wide by 15 and a half inches deep.
You do the math multiplying these three values and then dividing by 17 28. In order to get the cubic feet. That you have to work with awesome. It looks like i have four cubic feet to work with that means that i can pick a subwoofer that requires an air space of four cubic feet right wrong in this video.
We re going to talk about some of the common mistakes that i see during the planning stages of a subwoofer box build and i m going to talk about a few ways to choose what size subwoofer is best for you hey everyone welcome to fabrication friday the episodes here on car audio fabrication where i answer one of your questions about custom car audio or fabrication now. I know summer is coming and many of us are starting to plan out our next subwoofer box build a question that i receive here. Often is how do i pick out a subwoofer. There are definitely a ton of choices out there and it can really get confusing.
I know that it s easy to get caught up in all the specs and ratings and everything. But i really think that this all overshadows one of the most important basic things that we need to understand we need to be sure that we re picking the actual size of subwoofers that will work best in the space that we re going to be installing them into so let s go work through an example in the beginning of this video. I said that we had 14 inches tall by 32 inches. Wide by 15 and a half inches deep to work with now in this example.
We re going to be pretending that we re installing into a car trunk. But this method would also apply to the rear hatch of an suv. An undersea area of really anywhere in a vehicle. The first thing we need to consider is what face of the box.
Do we plan on installing the subwoofers on in the example that we re doing where we re installing the box into a car..
We either want the subwoofers to fire backwards or we want them to fire forwards. What this means is we have to mount the subwoofers on the 14 inch. Tall by 32 inch wide face right off the bat this eliminates 18 inch subwoofers and 15 inch subwoofers because they simply will not fit on that face now of course you could still do a 15 or an 18. But you re gonna have to fire the sub upwards and in a car that means you re going to be about that far away from the deck lid or the rear trunk.
What that means is there s gonna be a ton of rattling and you re really going to be losing a ton of acoustic energy. So really best case scenario. We want our subwoofers to either fire. Backwards or forwards.
This is an important consideration to take into account and you d be surprised. How many times people don t consider it the next thing that we need to do is to take into account our overall total volume. We take our depth width and height and multiply them and then divide by 1728 in order to convert to cubic feet. Now.
What is super important to note is that this value that we get in this case. 4 cubic. Feet is the total volume the total overall volume. This is not not not i can t say it enough.
This is not the airspace. I see this mistake made all the time a lot of guys will think hey yes. I have four cubic feet to work with i m going to order a 15 inch sub woofer that works with 14 cubic feet. And then they re disappointed when they find out that they don t have that much actual airspace to work with if you re not understanding.
Quite. Yet let me explain why inside this total four cubic feet volume. We need to fit several things we need to fit all the wood for the box. We need to fit any bracing.
We need to fit the displacement of the subwoofer itself..
We need to fit the volume of the port. And anything additional like 45s bracing the corner stuff like that this is why it s really critical that before we start building the subwoofer box. We really should have a subwoofer box design. But still before we can even start the design.
We still need to choose which subwoofers we want to use so we know that we have four cubic feet again of total volume. How can we determine how much of that is actually usable airspace before we do a design and before we do anything complicated so that we can pick out our subwoofer size. This is something i ve been thinking about for a while and i want to help the community with coming out with a guideline that you can use now before we go forward. I just want to stress that this is just a guideline.
It s not a rule. It s not a law. It s just a guideline that will help you give a good basis of prediction on how you should proceed in engineering. This is something that s common you don t want to go through a big elaborate study and a bunch of calculations just to find out that you were nowhere.
Even near where you needed to be so instead you make a series of assumptions in order to determine that you re at least close to where you need to be and then you can go back. And do all the hard core calculations. Now many of you may know over on my website car audio fabrication comm. I offer custom box designs that you can purchase purchasing these designs helps to support the channel and it helps me make more videos for you guys now what i actually did is i went through all the data of several of my different designs that have done for customers in the past for each of the designs.
I took the overall dimensions in order to determine the overall volume. I then took the boxes actual designed airspace and divided it by that total volume. And what that does is it gives me a ratio after repeating this calculation with several different designs. I was able to get an average of all those ratios now if you re confused no worries because it s about to make sense what averaging all those ratios did for me is it gave me a magic number an average ratio.
What this magic number allows me to do is when i m given an overall total volume. I can multiply it by that magic number in order to determine an approximate value of the airspace that magic number is 055. So let s go back to the original example. I know that i have 4 cubic feet of total volume and multiplied it by.
055 and that gives me 22..
Cubic. Feet. So what this tells me is if i take a 4 cubic feet total area. And then i apply a well designed port good bracing some quarter 45s and the displacement of average subwoofers on average i m going to have about.
22 cubic feet left over this 22. Cubic. Feet is the amount of air space. That i have to work with so this helps me because now.
I know that a good choice of a subwoofer might be a 12 inch subwoofer that has a recommended air space of two cubic feet or maybe two ten inch subwoofers that each have a recommended air space of 1 cubic. Feet each. Now there s a couple things that i want to point out. If your plan is to build a system that will be on less than a thousand watts.
The port won t need to be as large in reference to everything else. So you might be able to build a little bit bigger box than that. 22. Cubic.
Feet you might be able to go up to 25. Cubic feet again because the port doesn t need to be as large now. Let s say we re going with a very high powered box a box over a thousand watts. The port is going to need to be larger so in that case we might only be able to get 2 cubic.
Feet rather than 22. Again this is all an approximation. But at least now i have a quick reference point and a quick idea on what i can actually get away with for this design. Now using this approximation method may come as a surprise.
There s been many times in the past that i ve been working with somebody and they ve been wanting to put in two 18s in a small sedan and we go through this process..
And we find out that it might not be the best choice in the end though they end up more satisfied with two smaller subwoofers and that s something else that i want to talk about i know that it s really easy to believe that more is better a lot of people think oh bigger saab s definitely better. What s important to understand. Though is generally speaking. If you take a large subwoofer and you put it in an undersized subwoofer box.
The low frequencies are going to drop off much much faster. What this means is you re not going to add as much output on the low notes in contrast. When you install a smaller subwoofer into a box that has the proper air space. That it s designed for you bring back a lot more of the low end and the subwoofer is going to be able to play like it was designed so if you do these calculations and you find that you don t have enough volume for the subwoofers that you were hoping to use my suggestion is that you go down a size and use subwoofers that will in fact have proper air space something else to consider is since smaller subwoofers are generally less expensive you can use that cost savings to step it up to a higher quality subwoofer or maybe even up your power.
So when it comes time to do your next project. I recommend that you start with measuring out your total volume multiplying that by 055. To give yourself your total airspace volume. This guideline will help you make a better choice on what subwoofer size to go in after you determine what size you want to go in you can take a look at the board.
